ROAR in the City: Really Outrageous Adventure Race

Explore Downtown Colorado Springs like never before! Grab your team, roll up your sleeves and get ready to put your brawn and brain to the test! Numerous physical and mental activities wait for you along the course. Check in at "Basecamp" to get your clues to the race course. Then, head out by foot or by bike into the great unknown to attack your first activity! Gather clues to complete the course, and participate in the photo scavenger hunt to win prizes! Lunch Beat: GOCA Downtown

The UCCS Galleries of Contemporary Art (GOCA) launched Colorado's first Lunch Beat in December, 2010. GOCA continues to provide the Pikes Peak region with unique experiences that builds community through art.

Lunch Beat was founded by Molly Ränge in June 2010, and the first event was arranged in the Fabel garage under Hötorget in the city of Stockholm, Sweden. 14 people attended the event. Now it's an international phenomenon, with a basic concept. The rules are simple:

LUNCH BEAT MANIFESTO
  • 1st rule: If it's your first lunch at Lunch Beat, you have to dance.
  • 2nd rule: If it's your second, third or fourth time lunch at Lunch Beat, you have to dance.
  • 3rd rule: If you are getting too tired to actually dance at Lunch Beat, please have your lunch at some other place.
  • 4th rule: You don't talk about your job at Lunch Beat.
  • 5th rule: At Lunch Beat everyone present is your dance partner.
  • 6th rule: Any Lunch Beat are to be no longer than 60 minutes long and set during "lunch time."
  • 7th rule: Lunch Beat always serve their guest with a 1-hour DJ set and 1 take away meal.
  • 8th rule: Water is always served during a Lunch Beat for free.
  • 9th rule: Lunch Beat is a preferably drug free environment.
  • 10th rule: Lunch Beat can be set up anywhere by anyone as long as they are announced as public events, are nonprofit arrangements and are directed by this manifesto.

Opera Theatre's Vocal Arts Festival

Opera Theatre of the Rockies announces its 17th annual summer Vocal Arts Festival from July 8-29 at Colorado College. This year, forty-one talented singers from across Colorado and the U.S., ranging in age from high school through post college/professional gather to receive extensive training in voice, acting and dance, presenting four concerts with scenes from opera, Broadway and WWI and two Masterclasses in performances open to the public. The Festival opens Sunday, July 8 with Participant Hearings at Packard Hall at 1:30 pm where each performer sings one aria or song. There are four staged/costumed concerts that follow:
  • Let's Make a Scene on July 15 at 3 p.m. at Packard Hall
  • Scene Stealers on Sunday, July 22 at 3 p.m. at Packard Hall.
  • Craig Terry from Chicago Lyric's Ryan Artists Center on Friday, July 13 at 7 p.m. at Packard Hall.
  • Grand Finale Concert with Music of WWI on Sunday, July 29 at 3 pm. at the Richard Celeste Theatre, Cornerstone Arts Center, Colorado College.
The first Masterclass is on Friday, July 20 at 7 p.m. at Packard Hall conducted by Peter Randsman, singer and founder of Randsman Artists Management, in New York. The second Masterclass is on Friday, July 27 at 7 p.m. with Bryce Pinkham, Broadway star and Tony Nominee.

Storm Drain Art Project Call for Art

Local artists (ages 18 and older or high school seniors), are invited to graphic or illustrated designs between now and July 31, 2018 that reflect the themes “Keep It Clean We’re All Downstream” or “Only Rain Down the Drain.” Seven winning designs will be chosen to paint their art on storm drains in downtown Colorado Springs. Artist must be available on September 8, 2018, to install art. The Cause: The goal is to educate the public that pollutants that go into storm drains flow untreated into our creeks.  We’re looking for art that paints a picture of how important it is to keep our creeks clean. The Culmination: The City gets 7 beautiful storm drains. Each winning design will be awarded a $300 stipend. Partners:

Hops on the Bus

Join for Hops on the Bus Tour hosted by Local Relic! This free event starts with you boarding a CPCD/ Head Start school bus at a designated pickup location to be transported to Local Relic at the Carter Payne. Along the way, you will experience the life of a child living in poverty in this community. Upon arrival, there will be food and beer tastings as well as an opportunity to learn out CPCD’s Henry’s Heroes (hint, it involves a super hero cape)! RSVP required. Pick-ups currently scheduled for:

Rotary FLIGHT Preview Reception

The Rotary Club of Colorado Springs’ annual FLIGHT of the butterflies will be unveiled during the First Friday Art Walk, on August 3rd, at the Cultural Office’s exhibition space from 5-8PM. The event is free and open to the public. Join us for this premier of more than 50 “petite” butterflies designed by local artisans. These butterflies will be sold via silent auction on line and at the Rotary Club Social and Silent Auction on September 7th from 4:30-7:30 at the Antlers Hotel. Money raised goes to the Rotary Service Fund and School District 11 Arts and Science Programs. On August 3rd, enjoy the butterflies at the Cultural Office exhibition as you sip on complimentary wine and punch and enjoy tasty appetizers. This exhibition location in the Plaza of the Rockies couldn’t be more convenient as the First Friday Shuttle Bus stops right in front of the Cultural Office as it loops its way through Colorado Springs, Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs. If you can’t join us for the reception on August 3rd, you can enjoy the beautiful butterflies at the Cultural Office during normal business hours throughout the month of August. Summer Community Art and Mural Program

This summer, Concrete Couch will be working on murals, mosaics, banners, sculptures, lanterns, a fence, a garden, and more! Each SCAMP week is Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Drop in for one hour, one day, one week, or the whole summer! These events are free and open to all. Kids under 13 should bring an adult. Schedule of locations and times:

Pikes Peak Ascent & Marathon Run Fest

Colorado Springs will celebrate the region's running legacy and the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon at the inaugural Pikes Peak Run Fest on Thursday, August 16. Benefit Show and Fair - Multiple Sclerosis Alliance

This benefit show is to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Alliance organization. Anything they raise for MS, whether it be through donation, fundraising, or general awareness in the community, stays right here in southern Colorado and goes to local clients for services, assistance, and anything else that comes up. There will be a variety of local performers and artists, as well as games, contests, raffles, food and drink. It is sure to be a beautiful and fun event! Enjoy the beer garden and multiple stages of live music and performance throughout the festival grounds!

The What If…Festival, produced by Imagination Celebration and presented by Xfinity, features an imaginative array of intriguing innovations from the Pikes Peak region. A full schedule of performances, delectable foods, and experiences, as well as a festival map, will be available in advance and on-site on Festival Day.

Historic Van Briggle Pottery Festival

This is a rare, unique opportunity to see the incredible Dutch architecture and artistic detail of this Colorado College landmark – inside and out – now on the National Register of Historic Places. Learn of the tragically short life of Artus Van Briggle, Colorado Springs’ most noted artist of the Art Nouveau period. Historians, potters throwing pots on a wheel, and pottery collection experts (who will date-validate your own personal pottery pieces) will be presenting at each tour stop of this building that Artus’s wife, Anne (with help from General Palmer in 1907), built in his honor. Tours of the Van Briggle Memorial Pottery Building (1125 Geln Ave) will begin every 20 minutes between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. There will also be pottery authentication with a 2-piece limit. Enjoy wheel throwing demonstrations and hands-on clay activities by Bemis School of Art. There will also be tours of the Monument Valley Park Gardens by the Horticultural Arts Society.

2018 Artini

Get ready for one of the best parties of the year! The 2018 Artini, the official kickoff for this year’s Arts Month campaign, will take place on Friday, September 28th from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Mining Exchange Hotel (and the adjacent Gold Room). Hosted annually by the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region, the Artini is a free, community celebration with live entertainment on multiple stages, lots of mixing & mingling, and the opportunity to sample signature martinis created by some of the area’s top mixologists. Art + Martini = Artini! Although still in the planning stage, the 2018 Artini will feature live music on multiple stages, talented local performers, a DJ with dancing, a fashion show, aerialists, food trucks, a Photo Booth station, and more! Throughout the evening, local mixologists from the 365 Grand Club properties will be creating their signature martini drinks, and competing to earn the title of “Best Artini Martini 2018.” Free tastings will be available, and voting by Artini attendees will determine this year’s winner. Multiple cash bars and food stations will also be open for your drinking and eating pleasure throughout the event. A reminder that all attendees at the Artini must be 21 or older, and photo IDs will be required to enter the party. The 2018 Artini would not be possible without the generous support of the Mining Exchange hotel, the City of Colorado Springs, and HEX Audio/Visual. The Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is “connecting residents and visitors with arts & culture to enrich the Pikes Peak region.” Each October, the Cultural Office presents Arts Month as a way to elevate the visibility and value of arts & culture in our community. The theme for this year is "Celebrating 100 years Armistice/Veterans Day." This theme will be highlighted by the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. WWI came to an end with armistice. It wasn't until 1938 in the aftermath of WWII and the Korean war that November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States. Armistice legally became known as Veterans day.

Peak Startup: Startup Weekend

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.
