Virtual First Friday Continues! Join Us on June 5 for Art & a Silent Auction!

June's Virtual First Friday is going to be an exciting one! New art in all four galleries, including an opportunity to book a private tour and bid on MAC studio artist LuDel Deal Walter's art, with all proceeds from the sales benefiting the MAC!

This is your chance to own a signature LuDel piece, worth $1,000's, for only $100's. Bidding will begin at 5 p.m. on June 5, Virtual First Friday and go through June 28.

From the artist: "My work communicates the boundaries of where time passes into memory and life passes into death. How does memory hold the past captive? How does place tie into time and memory? Memory seems to work in a similar fashion; as we recall people and events from our memories, they are frozen at a particular time like stop-action movie stills or loops of a single scene.

I incorporate objects that are often ignored or overlooked to create meaning. The carcasses and the refuse of our lives are more than simple objects; they connect to the time when life and purpose was contained there. I am using recycled and found objects (hand-made paper, junk, bones, etc.) to represent the passage of time and the quality between life and death.

I find that by using images of actual carcasses and garbage in combination with textured papers and found objects, I have a more visceral connection to the work. We no longer revere life enough to consider the process of dying; because we can't embrace death, we can't fully embrace life. Every living thing has a quality that leaves the body at the time of death. Every object has a quality of memory. What is that liminal quality? Where is it? These pieces are intended to ask the viewer to consider the life and purpose that once inhabited these images."

Walters' work is hanging in the Grand Hallway gallery in 515.

In the Slam Gallery, MAC studio artist Ken Cowdery's Retroluminaries are on display. Cowdery's artwork is also available to be viewed and purchased by appointment.

From the artist:
"The images I love creating line art and I love how easy it is to reproduce. Something as simple as a stencil can reproduce line art. My most recent work using a laser cutter and etcher, offers a new outlet using state-of-the-art technology. Line art can be beautiful, funny or strange, but almost always has strong visual impact.

The media and technology
The laser cutter and engraver is uniquely suited to work with line artwork. It can cut and engrave using many kinds of materials. Keeping the work two dimensional keeps me in touch with the original intent of the image, but by adding multiple layers, you can also enjoy a three dimensional piece. Paper and wood were some of the earliest materials used to mass produce images and words, but with new technology, paper and wood can once again be fresh and optimistic.

I am a doodler. I am unable to sit with a pencil in my hand and not draw. It’s compulsive and something I love to do. I particularly love creating line artwork. Drawing while only using two colors presents interesting challenges and opportunities. Once it has been created, line art can be reproduced using various technologies. While I still use pencils and pens to draw, I create most of my images using Adobe Illustrator. After teaching Graphic Arts and Digital Media for 34 years in both high school and college levels, I have retired. I am happy to finally have time to spend time on my own work."

To set up an appointment for a private tour of the galleries, contact manager@manitouartcenter.org.

'Urban Relics' is a new exhibition by Jon Francis and Tylan Troyer.

"As a Colorado Springs native, I am continually inspired by this city and region.  I have painted oil landscapes of our beautiful area for more than half of my life.  I have watched my small town evolve and change to a large and complicated city. Change is difficult, and the memories associated with time spent in these places hold an important place in my life.

In a world of disposable everything, I am currently focused on painting urban landscapes as a way to record, preserve, and savor what has shaped my childhood and shaped Colorado Springs. The old, the rusted, the abandoned have a beauty all their own. Not only are these moments an important part of our community, but an important part of my memories. My canvas is a place where these images are saved from being forgotten as forward movement scrapes them from our city." -Jon Francis

“My work is about capturing often overlooked and fleeting moments, thoughts and visions using the quality purity and honesty of line; an attempt to capture the mysteries of the conscious and subconscious and its interaction with the environment; using color and form to create an emotional connection to the viewer. I am interested in what is just beneath the surface and much, much, deeper." -Tylan Troyer

Both The Broadmoor World Arena and Pikes Peak Center will abide by the Governor’s restriction and suspend all events through April 13, 2020.

This event has been rescheduled from March 20 to June 5.

After 12 albums, five Grammy's, and performing for several U. S. presidents, Adams still wows audiences all over the world. Ever since her 1988 debut album, “Just As I Am,” Adams has been renowned for pioneering the blend of modern gospel music infused with soul and jazz.

While she served as a lead singer with the Southeast Inspirational Choir in her native town, Houston, Texas, Adams caught the eye of the prolific composer/producer, Thomas Whitfield, who guided her first album. Her incredible talent and style served to have her hailed as the most versatile contemporary gospel singer since Aretha Franklin.

Marvin Sapp has been singing since the age of four and has shared the stage with many gospel notables. His vocal gift is celebrated across musical genres.  Renowned for songs such as, “Sweeter as the Days Go By,” “Perfect Peace,” “Praise Him in Advance,” “The Best in Me,” and a dedication to his wife, “My Testimony.”

Sapp has enjoyed a decorated music career that includes 10 Grammy nominations, 22 Stellar Awards, two Soul Train Music Awards, two BET Awards, two Dove Awards, and eight BMI songwriter’s awards. His mega-selling, “Never Would Have Made It,” held the No. 1 spot on both Gospel and R&B radio for more than a year, and has been among the most ubiquitous Gospel and R&B songs.

Meet us at Carnelian Coffee on the first Sunday of each month from to discuss that month's book club selection. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

June's title is The Girls of Atomic City by Denise Kiernan. Copies from the 12-item book club set will be handed out during May's meeting.

Please note: The July through December selections will be announced during June's meeting.

From the publisher:

The incredible story of the young women of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, who played a crucial role in one of the most significant moments in U.S. history.

The Tennessee town of Oak Ridge was created from scratch in 1942. One of the Manhattan Project's secret cities, it didn't appear on any maps until 1949, and yet at the height of World War II it was using more electricity than New York City and was home to more than 75,000 people, many of them young women recruited from small towns across the South. Their jobs were shrouded in mystery, but they were buoyed by a sense of shared purpose, close friendships--and a surplus of handsome scientists and Army men!

But against this vibrant wartime backdrop, a darker story was unfolding. The penalty for talking about their work--even the most innocuous details--was job loss and eviction. One woman was recruited to spy on her coworkers. They all knew something big was happening at Oak Ridge, but few could piece together the true nature of their work until the bomb "Little Boy" was dropped over Hiroshima, Japan, and the secret was out. The shocking revelation: the residents of Oak Ridge were enriching uranium for the atomic bomb.

Though the young women originally believed they would leave Oak Ridge after the war, many met husbands there, made lifelong friends, and still call the seventy-year-old town home. The reverberations from their work there--work they didn't fully understand at the time--are still being felt today.

In The Girls of Atomic City, Denise Kiernan traces the astonishing story of these unsung WWII workers through interviews with dozens of surviving women and other Oak Ridge residents. Like The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, this is history and science made fresh and vibrant--a beautifully told, deeply researched story that unfolds in a suspenseful and exciting way.

Eric Elison always enjoyed and admired the voice and songs of Gordon Lightfoot. In college he was frequently asked to play Gordon Lightfoot’s songs. He was told he “sounds just like Gordon Lightfoot.”

In 2016, at a Folk Alliance Event, he was told by a famous contemporary of Gordon Lightfoot’s that he was “Channeling Gordie.” After recording an album of original music in Nashville, Eric’s Producer, Tom Manche of Studio X, advised Eric that he sounded so much like Gordon Lightfoot, that he should consider performing Gordon Lightfoot Tribute Concerts.

Today, Eric is a touring Gordon Lightfoot Tribute Artist. He calls his show, Celebrating Gordon Lightfoot. In the show, Eric is backed by a five piece band (or Trio) and sings Gordon Lightfoot’s songs just as the beloved Canadian Troubadour did. Eric sings treasured songs like: Carefree Highway, Rainy Day People, If You Could Read My Mind, Sundown, Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and Beautiful.

Eric is eager to introduce Gordon Lightfoot to younger audiences so that they too can come to appreciate the Legacy of Gordon Lightfoot’s Hall of Fame Career.

Jazz in the Garden in the Time of COVID-19? You bet!
We’re excited to announce that, yes, indeed the 2020 Jazz in the Garden series will happen! But with the need to keep physical distance, it won't be the quite same as in years past. We know it won’t be as much fun as gathering with 700 of your closest friends for each concert, but we’re committed first, to ensuring the community’s safety and second, to finding a creative way to offer what we know is a much-loved offering.
So get ready! In partnership with Jazz 93.5, we’ll broadcast each concert, creating a soundtrack for your very own garden party (practicing physical distancing of course). We invite you to throw something yummy on the grill, chill a beverage and dance like no one is watching.  Think of it as Jazz in your Garden!

Want to receive a notice when we update our schedule each season, and an email about each concert? Just click here, click on the Sign Up button, enter your name and email and select Jazz. We promise that we will send one email a few days before each concert, and that we do not share email addresses or send you information you have not signed up for. Honest!

[more+]

It's appropriate that Boz Scaggs' new album is Out of the Blues since the blues is what first sparked his five-decade musical career.

Born William Royce Scaggs in Canton, Ohio on June 8, 1944, he grew up in Oklahoma and Texas, where he spent his teenage years immersed in the blues, R&B and early rock 'n' roll. While attending school in Dallas, he played in local combos.

Scaggs continued to mine a personalized mix of rock, blues, and R&B influences, along with a signature style of ballads on such influential 70's albums as MomentsBoz Scaggs & BandMy TimeSlow Dancer, and 1976's Silk Degrees. The latter release became a massive commercial breakthrough, reaching Number Two and remaining on the album charts for 115 weeks.

It spawned three Top 40 hit singles: It's Over, Lido Shuffle and the Grammy-winning LowdownSilk Degrees was followed by the albums Down Two Then Left and Middle Man, and such hit singles as Breakdown Dead Ahead, Jo Jo and Look What You've Done to Me. He returned to the studio after an 8-year hiatus and released, Other Roads, Some Change, Dig, and the Grammy-nominated Come on Home.

Despite his 70's successes, Scaggs spent much of the 80's out of the music-biz spotlight, traveling, opening a family business, fathering young children and founding the San Francisco nightclub Slims. He returned to the studio after an 8-year hiatus. "Music has been a constant companion and I'm feeling more free with it than ever," Scaggs commented.

Honest!
