2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the World of WearableArt ™ (known as WOW), New Zealand’s largest arts show.

WOW is an international design competition that attracts hundreds of entries, with an annual awards show that presents the finalist garments in a theatrical extravaganza that collides at the intersection of fashion and art.

The rules of the competition encourage anything that is in any way wearable, as long as it is original, beautifully designed, and well-made, resulting in garments that are constructed from an extraordinary array of traditional and unconventional materials. The challenge: take art off the wall and adorn onto the human form.

The 32 award-winning garments presented in this exhibition represent some of the most original, provocative, and unorthodox objects in the WOW Museum collection, demonstrating what designers from a wide variety of occupations can imagine when they are released from the constraints of “fashion” and are encouraged to see the human body as a blank canvas.

“Think of an Alexander McQueen show meets the Nutcracker on crack and then take it up a notch.” –Huffington Post

This exhibition is organized by the World of WearableArt, Ltd.

Featured image: Hermecea by Jann Kerr, New Zealand.

Painter and printmaker Erin Jones reunites with her hometown arts community for the first time in two years with her solo portrait exhibition, “Portrait Lab”.

In the series, Jones calls upon individuals from her daily life in order to carry out a deep investigation of portraits past. Her exploration spans historical innovations in portraiture from as recent as impressionism to as old as the ancient Fayum portraits of Egypt.

The work aims to expose the intricate forms and color structures of the human figure, while also surfacing the personalities and emotional landscapes of her subjects.

Erin Jones is native to Colorado Springs and currently lives in Denver, Colorado. Her love of visual art was recognized in early childhood and fostered into adulthood through several community arts organizations. In 2011, she began studying internationally at the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts in Italy and Greece and has returned intermittently on four separate occasions to continue studying classical painting, printmaking, drawing, and art history.

Cottonwood Center for the Arts in partnership with Plaza of the Rockies is proud to present the artwork of Tracy Kuonen for the months of July through September.

Tracy Kuonen deals in abstraction. She is best known for her colorful paintings composed of multilayered brushstrokes that intermingle and disperse while rhythmically dancing across the surface.

Her process is an intuitive one, “I depend on the painting to tell me how it wants to move forward. Every added or subtracted mark informs the painting and in turn, the painting informs me where it wants to go."

A celebration of her life and talent, this show will feature work both for sale and from private collections.

Laurel Ellen Swab was born on June 30th,1969, in Louisville, Kentucky.

She was a self-taught sculptor, mastering many materials and techniques.

After a trip to Italy she turned to painting and soon became accomplished in the figurative, still life, surrealism and portraiture genres. She was also a muralist, illuminating the walls and ceilings of several homes of prominent residents of the city.

In 2012, she married Austin Cole Hartman and took up residence on 20 acres of beautiful land between the towns of Cripple Creek and Guffey.

Laurel began designing and making jewelry.

She and Austin developed a passion for Colorado gemstones and crystals.

Together they prospected their mineral claims for topaz, aquamarine, amazonite, smoky quartz and fluorite.

Spooky stories and tales of woe have entertained people for generations. In nineteenth century London, a series of illusions and attractions brought to life these horror stories of decades past in the form of dark entertainment.

Almost a century later, France began experimenting with macabre themes demonstrating the disturbed in an artistic way. But haunted ploys did not emerge wholeheartedly until the 1930s in the United States when parents schemed up ways to distract young tricksters.

The revolution of these deceptive traps and illusions came to its apex when haunted houses nearly took over as a main source of entertainment during Halloween. Today, Haunted Houses could not exist without the holiday nor Halloween without the chilling presence of Haunted Houses.

Artists’ works for this call for entries must exhibit superstitious, haunted, or other dark themes. All media will be considered. Installations are highly encouraged, but will only be displayed for First Friday.
